one of my favourite places, coober pedy, where the local serbian orthodox priest, for the parish of 60 resident serbs, has a hilariously affectionate boston terrier with what could possibly asthma or just a heavy breather - trying to get him to do his thing in the carpark to the underground church

bird calls at dawn mix with the sounds of trucks on the nearby main arterial road north. the first morning of the solo drive north, 3000kms from adelaide to katherine, to start work

day two: out in the desert, near the edge of the woomera prohibited zone, the dusty carpark at the standard outback pub/postoffice/petrol station at pimba is host to crows and grey nomads seeking refuge (and often ice cream) from the dry, hot conditions

an old recording from 1999 of a helicopter starting up at a small regional airport in tennant creek. found while catching a quiet moment on the lawns of the area near the airport - back when times weren't so quiet

the musical fence outside Winton in central Queensland is not very high in my personal top ten of "best things that make a sound" but also in a very beautiful part of the desert and a great place to break the 4,500 drive from the Sydney to Darwin. High wind conditions and flat, open country are ideal for this aeolian installation, two fences 120 degrees apart each built with a resonator that amplifies the vibration of a six wires and the harmonics that eerily appear in the wind. the trucking yard across the road adds a nice touch too. a rough recording but an amazing sound

a relaxed afternoon rowing pace on the wisla in a twin seater fiberglass rowing boat with the seats sliding on metal rails. recorded in the 170km between krakow and sandomierz as part of a series of documentations on and around the river of an expedition to row the full 1000kms of Poland's longest river from its beginnings in the Tatras to its end at the coast near Gdansk

the border between South Australia and the place where things start to get strange, the Northern Territory. Slept with feet in one state and head in the other, crows (once again) and a car's approach across the wide expanse heralds the sun's rise

storms and cicadas are sound du jour for a couple of months out this way, almost impossible to hear anything without one or the other of them being in the foreground. with a few metres of rain a year in parts of the NT, this rough recording of a storm, with fancy phasing from moving mics, gives the impression of the weight of water and the feriocity of the rain. the windows (louvres) were partly closed too and it was still this loud - sometimes its impossible to shout over the rain...
